Catalonia in Venice – AIR/ARIA/AIRE is a Collateral Event of the Biennale Architettura 2021 that reflects upon the central theme of the Biennale, ‘How will we live together?’, with an investigation into air as a common asset upon which our survival depends. Under the name Aire, the exhibition highlights the role of architecture and urbanism within the context of two interconnected global crises: the climate emergency and the public health crisis.

The AIR/ARIA/AIRE project is an operation aimed at the production of evidence. The crime is death by air pollution, mostly in urban areas. The exhibition curator and architect Olga Subirós proposes an audiovisual multi-projection showing cartographic evidence of the air pollution in the city carried out by the urban researchers at 300.000 Km/s. The scientific evidence on the materiality of air is combined with artistic evidence in the form of a sound installation performed by Maria Arnal and jointly composed with John Talabot, a new aria that asks us whose air it is. This question regarding the ownership of the resources required for our existence is also the essential question about the city model and how we will survive together.
